Ex-WWE Superstar Calls On Company To Bring Back Forgotten Title

A former WWE star thinks the company should make one key decision.

In 2016, WWE announced the creation of the Cruiserweight Classic tournament, where the winner would become the new Cruiserweight Champion. This marked the first time since the company had a Cruiserweight Champion since 2007, although the titles didn’t share a lineage.

The revived division was subsequently moved to Monday Night Raw, before a dedicated show named 205 Live! was launched on the WWE Network. However, the show later became an offshoot of NXT and eventually closed in 2022.

With regard to the title itself, it was unified with the North American Championship in January 2022.

Following WWE’s acquisition of AAA, it’s been speculated that the company could relaunch a Cruiserweight division, and one former Superstar feels it would be a big positive.

Speaking on Knockouts and 3 Counts, Cedric Alexander claimed WWE should never have gotten rid of the title in the first place.

“Oh! God, yes. 100 percent (WWE should bring back the Cruiserweight Title). They should have never got rid of it to begin with. They should have never got rid of it.

It wasn’t until me, Buddy (Matthews) and (Mustafa) Ali left that they kind of just gave up on 205 Live as a whole it felt like, and then on top of that, the pandemic hit and it didn’t make it any easier. They just kind of gave up on it but, they should have never got rid of it.

I think the cruiserweight division or light heavyweight, whatever you wanna call it, should have never left because it gives more guys that opportunity to succeed because no matter who’s in charge at WWE or whatever, it’s always gonna be a big man’s game. You’re not always gonna have a Rey Mysterio facing Drew McIntyre every time and then expect for Rey to get over every single time.

Not everyone can be a Rey Mysterio where they can be a smaller guy and still get the same kind of respect, and having that cruiserweight, junior heavyweight-style exclusive to more of those kinds of guys, it really helps, in my opinion.

I don’t think it’s one of those titles, like, oh! We just gotta have a new title. It bars to what you were saying, the kinship between UFC and more other combat sports with weight classes and stuff like that.

As much of a style clash as it is to see, like, a Big Show versus (Rey) Fénix, that’s not something you realistically wanna see every single time. I’m going, alright, Fénix is gonna beat him this time. Sometimes you wanna see a Fénix against Penta and you wanna see a Fénix against Dante Martin and let ‘em just go crazy.”

Cedric Alexander Regretted Signing WWE Contract

During the same interview, Cedric Alexander admitted wishing he’d never signed his final WWE contract.

Back in September 2024, it was reported that Alexander had signed a “multi-year” contract with the company, halting speculation that he could follow former Hurt Business partners out the door. Shortly after penning the deal, MVP and Bobby Lashley signed with AEW, with the former debuting at Grand Slam in New York.

WWE ultimately released Alexander in February 2025, after the star wrestled just nine times in the months since signing that multi-year contract. All of those matches were in NXT.
