Ex-WWE Star Nearly Headed Hurt Syndicate-Style Faction
A former WWE superstar revealed that there were plans for him to lead a stable.
David Otunga isn’t going to be remembered for having a legendary career as a wrestler in WWE, but the lawyer turned wrestler had a good run in the 2010s, both in the ring and as an announcer as well.
As a wrestler, Otunga was most known for being part of the Nexus stable in 2010, and he was even a WWE Tag Team Champion with John Cena at one point.
In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, the 45-year-old Otunga revealed that he never actually considered himself retired as a wrestler. That led to him revealing that there were discussions for him to lead a stable of wrestlers.
“In my mind, I’ve never had my last match. It’s just where I was in the company and becoming an announcer and doing all that they didn’t really want me doing in ring stuff. You actually get a different contract where you are on an announcer’s contract instead of a talent one.
So it just was they weren’t even thinking about me, booking me creatively, although I did pitch some ideas, and was gonna have my own stable. I wanted to, got a little bit of traction.”
David Otunga Was Going To Lead A WWE Stable As A Heel Lawyer
Using his background as a lawyer, David Otunga was going to use that in leading a stable of wrestlers. However, it never actually made it to television. Otunga was asked who would be in the stable.
“I don’t know. I pitched something, I don’t know if I called it The Firm or what it was, but it was kind of what The Hurt Syndicate ended up becoming. But it was before that, so it was three years before that. I don’t know when they came out. It might even been longer, because it was 2019, this is before COVID, at least.
But anyway, I was going to be the leader of that as a heel lawyer. And, yeah, they liked it, but it obviously didn’t [happen], they liked me better as an announcer.”
During the same interview, David Otunga said he would return to WWE if they called him to come back.
