Ex-WWE Champion “Very Angry” To Miss Out On John Cena Match

John Cena

Time is running out to wrestle John Cena.

On October 11, John Cena will tick off another match on his retirement wishlist when he squares off against AJ Styles. The pair were embroiled in a lengthy rivalry in 2016 and into 2017, and their matches are still fondly remembered by fans.

Although the match was made following campaigning from both men on social media, it’s reportedly been planned for some time. One report suggested that the online nature of the build was because of Cena’s limited number of remaining televised dates.

Fans on social media were quick to celebrate the news that Cena and Styles will be running it back one last time, but not everyone was impressed.

The Scramble Is On To Face John Cena

In a new interview with Adrian Hernandez of Unlikely, The Miz dived into his lengthy WWE career and his close friendship with CM Punk. Something that seemed impossible just a few years ago.

During the conversation, Miz also pressed his frustration at again missing out on the chance to wrestle Cena. He said that while he’s happy that Styles gets a match he clearly desperately wanted, he’s “very angry” to be overlooked yet again.

“I’ll tell you what. I’ll tell you backstage, I was happy for AJ Styles, but very angry that it’s AJ Styles versus John Cena and not John Cena versus The Miz.”

Expanding further, Miz highlighted that he beat Cena at WrestleMania 27 for the World Championship, a rare feat during the star’s career.

“I beat the guy at WrestleMania in the main event for the WWE Championship, one of the only people ever to do something like that, and I can’t get a match with John Cena. He’s got five dates left.”

Miz was also quick to point out that he’s been pushing to face Cena for over a year, going back to the veteran’s bombshell retirement announcement at Money In The Bank in July 2024.

“The audience could say, ‘We want The Miz versus John Cena,’ and I would love to have one more match,” he said. “I’ve been talking about this since the retirement tour started. I was the first person to go ‘sign me up.’ I’m putting my name in the hat. When’s my number going to get called? Maybe never, because there’s only five left.”

On September 25, AJ Styles also announced his plan to retire. Styles said that while an appearance at WrestleMania 42 is far from a certainty, he’d like to compete at the event one more time before hanging up his boots.

Styles didn’t offer specific details, but he confirmed that he’ll retire in 2026.
