Ex-WWE Champion Considering Retiring Amid Injury Battle
A former WWE Champion and Hall of Famer is finally contemplating hanging up his boots as he battles serious injury issues.
Rob Van Dam made his name in ECW before he made the move to WWE when the extreme promotion closed its doors. In WWE, Van Dam made it to the very top of the tree, memorably winning the WWE Championship from John Cena at One Night Stand in 2006.
RVD has also wrestled for TNA and has a handful of matches for AEW under his belt. But after suffering an injury in his only match of 2025, it seems time might finally be running out for The Whole F’n Show.
Speaking on TMZ Inside The Ring, Rob Van Dam opened up about the serious heel injury that’s already kept him out of action for five months when he thought he’d be back in action a lot sooner:
I feel like I’m between the middle and the end of it. So, you know, it’s been a while, a lot longer than I thought it would take to heal. And from what I’ve learned, every calcaneus fracture is different depending on how the bones are fragmented, and if you have surgery. This was April 5 for me, so it’s been quite a while. I thought I was looking at like eight, nine weeks, and I’d be back.
I’m at a point now where, I mean, I can see improvement all the time, but I’m nowhere near ready to wrestle. I’m not jumping or even running yet.
WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam Considering His Future
Given the time his recovery has taken, Van Dam admitted that he’s not certain that he’ll return to the ring again and could finally retire:
Sure, it’s possible. I think anything’s possible. And I’m not ruling anything out personally, as far as whether I want to continue or not, after my heels are completely 100%… I change my mind like every few days about it.
Sometimes I feel like, yeah, you know, I could go, feel great. I could go show the people that, you know, I can still do what I could do. Hopefully, it’ll motivate and inspire some people, maybe. And then at other times, I feel like, yeah, maybe I’d rather just be attached to the old school wrestling and remembered for that.
