Ex-Divas Champion Credits AJ Lee For Keeping Them Sane In WWE
A former champion in WWE is grateful for what AJ Lee did for her when the two women were together in the mid-2010s.
One of the most memorable WWE main roster debuts in the women’s division took place on the Raw after WrestleMania 30 in 2014 when Paige got called up from NXT and beat AJ Lee in a short match to become the Divas Champion.
At the time, Paige was just 21 years old, while AJ Lee had been one of the top women superstars in the company for a few years.
It was about a year after that when Lee left WWE, and she stayed away for about a decade before returning earlier this year.
During an appearance on the Daria & Toni Unwrapped podcast with Saraya (fka Paige in WWE) as the guest, the former Divas Champion Saraya spoke glowingly about the kind of friend that AJ Lee was to her.
“AJ’s f**king wonderful. I call her my fairy Godmother, dude. She took me under her wing, big time. I texted her the other day. We haven’t talked in a while, but when we were on the road together, we were just f**king close.
Oh yeah, she bought me Doc Martens with the Union Jack the first time I got to tour in the UK. She babied me, dude. She babied me and I just will forever be thankful for her.
She kept me normal until she left and that’s when everything f**ked up for me. (laughs) She’s the one who kept me, like, sane.”
AJ Lee Was Surprised By WWE Fan Reaction During Return Promo
To build up her Wrestlepalooza tag team match with husband CM Punk against Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch, AJ Lee did an in-ring promo on the September 8th edition of WWE Monday Night Raw, where she talked about her life in the last decade.
As she spoke from the heart to the fans, Lee spoke about going to therapy and how it helped her, so that led to a “Therapy” chant from the fans. AJ Lee has since admitted that she was genuinely stunned by the reaction.
“That was a genuine reaction of like being stunned. I heard one person start to chant it and then a few people around him started chanting “therapy”. And I thought it was so funny.
I heard it and I was like I have to respond to this, three guys were chanting therapy and then everyone started to do it and my mind exploded.
I think if you have a judgmental idea of what you think wrestling crowds could be, you don’t think that they’re in touch with their emotions or open-minded and empathetic like that.
“It was just like my worlds came together and now I did a signing and people had ‘Therapy is cool’ merch, they made themselves. And I’ve had so many people from that moment say they decided to get therapy themselves because of that segment. It’s like what did we do, you guys?
This is the coolest thing in the world to combine these two things that mean everything to me. But I hope those fans know that they are the reason I came back.”
Next up for AJ Lee is the Women’s WarGames match at Survivor Series on November 29th. Lee will team up with Rhea Ripley, Charlotte Flair, Iyo Sky & Alexa Bliss against the team of Asuka, Kairi Sane, Nia Jax, Lash Legend and Becky Lynch, who is Lee’s main WWE rival.
