Ex-AEW Star Doesn’t Know Why Tony Khan Signed Them

AEW Tony Khan

Tony Khan signed one star without a plan.

Just weeks after her WWE career came to an end, and five years after being told she’d never wrestle again, Saraya made her shocking AEW debut at Grand Slam 2022.

Despite her earlier retirement, the former Divas Champion eventually returned to the ring and even won the AEW Women’s World Championship. However, she stepped away from the ring in October 2024, and it was announced she’d reached an agreement to leave the company in March 2025. At the time, her contract had around six months to run.

More recently, Saraya announced that she’ll resume wrestling training in early 2026. Although she insisted that this doesn’t mean she’ll return to WWE, she’s been linked with a comeback ever since she left AEW.

Saraya On Working With Tony Khan

During an appearance on Daria and Toni Unwrapped, Saraya looked back on her time with AEW and how she ended up signing with the company. She explained that she was signed without a plan, noting that she has “no idea” why Tony Khan signed her.

“I have no idea what I was signed for. He (Tony Khan) just wanted me there. I was like, great. We’ll figure it out. Which is great, because they wanted me so bad, right, and it was awesome.”

During the same interview, Saraya revealed that she wanted to quit AEW just days after making her debut at Grand Slam. The British star’s second appearance for the company came at Dynamite, where she cut a promo on Britt Baker that was widely panned by fans and critics.

She said that the promo was such a mess that she wondered whether she’d made a mistake coming back to wrestling.
