Eric Bischoff Confesses He Distrusted Ex-WWE Star
Eric Bischoff has revealed why one ex-WWE star didn’t make it in WCW: because he simply didn’t trust them.
Eric Bischoff helped haul WCW from the depths of despair to the number one wrestling promotion in the world during the nineties. Led by on-screen stars such as the NWO, Sting, and Goldberg, WCW’s roster was bolstered by a much-vaunted cruiserweight division, as many Mexican stars were introduced to a global audience for the very first time.
While Bischoff is known for snapping up several major WWE stars for big bucks, he also cast a wide net over ECW as well, taking talent such as Chris Jericho, Dean Malenko, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Mike Awesome, Raven, and The Sandman from Paul Heyman’s company, among others.
While many top ECW stars got their chance to make their name in WCW, one who only managed a brief stop in the company was Sabu.
Eric Bischoff Didn’t Trust Sabu
Speaking on his 83 Weeks podcast, Eric Bischoff explained that Sabu was overlooked and allowed to return to ECW because he simply didn’t trust him:
I didn’t trust Sabu, simple as that. It wasn’t about his work, it wasn’t about his character; he had a reputation. I was well aware of him; I had watched some of his stuff, it was–and by the way, Kevin Sullivan talked me into this one. This was not me going ‘Wow, I can’t wait to get my hands on Sabu,’ it was the complete opposite of that. Like, I wasn’t dead set against it, but there was some selling going on, so it was definitely a Kevin call.
