Eddie Kingston Makes Surprising AEW Admission
Eddie Kingston has named the moment he changed his approach.
Eddie Kingston ended AEW Worlds End 2023 on top of the world. By the time the show went off the air, Kingston had been crowned the first-ever Continental Champion after winning the Continental Classic while retaining his ROH World Championship and NJPW Openweight Championship.
However, in that moment of satisfaction, Kingston realised that he needed to make some major changes.
During a new appearance on Busted Open Radio, Kingston explained that from that moment on, he needed to approach things as a business. Moving forward, he had to do things for AEW, and not just for himself.
“I think after I got the triple crown after Worlds End. I sat in the back and looked at all three of the belts and I went, ‘Okay, this is a business now, now I’ve gotta make business decisions. I’m a champion, I should be treated as such.’
I need to not pick my opponents, I gotta do what’s right for business because if AEW is not around, where am I going to make my money? I’m gonna have to go back to the independents. As a champion, this has to be business.
I was sitting by myself having a little bit of whiskey and I went, ‘Alright, business time now. I reached all my goals, this is business now.’”
Eddie Kingston Reflects On AEW’s Evolution
In the same interview, Eddie Kingston gave his thoughts on the evolution of AEW from 2019 to 2025. Interestingly, he said that while it was obvious that the promotion had changed dramatically, it was less clear whether that change was good or bad.
As only he can, Kingston added that he still gets his check, so it’s all good.
The Mad King made his AEW debut back in July 2020, answering Cody Rhodes’ TNT Championship open challenge.
