Dusty Rhodes Told Ex-WWE Star To Scrap “Awful” Scripted Promo
WWE’s former policy on scripted promos was rarely popular.
Although the process has changed since Triple H took creative control of the company, promos for WWE talents were heavily scripted for several years. In the eyes of critics, this led to segments feeling inauthentic and promos sounding clunky as talents tried to remember their lines.
However, in more recent years talents have delighted in having more creative freedom and the chance to express themselves in a personal way. It’s perhaps no surprise that stars such as Drew McIntyre have excelled in this freedom while having several memorable changes with CM Punk and others.
MVP Clashed With WWE Creative Over Promo
Although he wrestles much less at this stage of his career, MVP is still widely regarded as one of the best talkers in the industry. Now in AEW, he heads up the Hurt Syndicate advocating for World Tag Team Champions Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin.
During an appearance on the F Y’all Podcast with CT Fletcher, MVP looked back on his early years in WWE between 2005 and 2010, and a time when the company was very hands-on with promos.
MVP recalled being given one script so bad he took it to Dusty Rhodes — a man who knew a thing or two about promos — who told him not to use it.
“I remember when I first started. We did a press conference where MVP was signing his contract. They gave me my script, and I read the lines. This was the actual verbiage in the script, ‘Check out these fine threads I be wearing.’
I went to Dusty and showed it to him. ‘What the f*ck is this?’ Dusty looked at it and goes, ‘Damn, baby. That’s awful. I don’t know who wrote that sh*t, but go do what you do.’
I went and asked, ‘Who wrote this shIt?’ It was somebody in Connecticut; he wasn’t even there. I figured out early on that ‘they’ can’t write for me. You can give me what you want, give me an overview, and let me go out there and do it.
Don’t ever again hand me some sh*t like that.”
On the March 26 edition of Dynamite, MVP looked set to add MJF to the Hurt Syndicate before Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin got involved.
