Drew McIntyre On Being Convinced By Triple H To Return To WWE In 10 Minutes
After three years away from WWE, Drew McIntyre returned in 2017 and has credited a 10 minute conversation with Triple H for the decision.
As part of the WrestleMania 33 festivities in Orlando, Florida, NXT: TakeOver took place and Drew McIntyre was shown at ringside marking his return to the company following his release in June 2014.
During his time away from WWE, ‘The Scottish Warrior’ had competed around the world and completely reinvented himself, meaning the new version which would appear for the then black and gold brand was a far cry from either Vince McMahon’s chosen star or the Three Man Band personas that had been seen in the company before.
In a conversation with talkSPORT’s Alex McCarthy, Drew McIntyre has admitted that he originally planned for his future to be elsewhere but the first 10 minutes of a conversation with Triple H had him convinced to return.
I wanted a match. It’s unfortunate it won’t happen but I’m just glad he’s healthy for himself and his family. He’s the reason I’m back in WWE 100 percent. My mind was set at the time when I wasn’t going to re-sign with IMPACT that I’m going to Japan. I was made up in my mind and nothing could change my mind, but then [William] Regal, always been a mentor, gave me a call and said speak to Triple H before you make any decisions. That led to a phone call from Triple H, we spoke for about 40 minutes and my mind was made up in the first 10 minutes.
McIntyre continued, saying that ‘The King Of Kings’ made it clear that he hadn’t been out of sight whilst he was competing on the independent scene.
Him telling me ‘I’ve been watching you’ and I’m thinking I appreciate that, Hunter, but no you haven’t [laughs]. You’re too busy, you’ve got too much to do. You’re not sitting watching Drew indie matches! But sure enough, the way he spoke about some of my matches and the way I’ve developed I was like wow, he really has been watching. Aside the fact he was proud how far I’ve come as a performer, it meant more to me how proud he was how far I’d come as a man, and he made it clear to me it was time to come home.
Whilst Drew McIntyre is expected to feud with Roman Reigns over the summer, he is continuing to engage with Tyson Fury amidst speculation of a high-profile bout between the two.
