Drew McIntyre Addresses Why Personal Rivalries Matter In WWE

Drew McIntyre Punk WWE Smackdown

Drew McIntyre knows that having a personal rivalry with somebody is what matters when you’re a WWE superstar.

The lineup for WWE SummerSlam in Cleveland features seven singles matches. Six of those matches are championship matches, but the one match without a title on the line is perhaps the most anticipated match at the show.

That match will feature former WWE Champions Drew McIntyre in action against a returning CM Punk, who will be competing in his first televised WWE singles match in over a decade. It will also be Punk’s first match in over six months after suffering a torn triceps injury at the Royal Rumble in late January.

A singles match between McIntyre and Punk would likely be enough to sell itself to most WWE fans, but the company has also added former WWE Champion Seth “Freakin” Rollins as the special guest referee. McIntyre and Punk don’t like each other while Rollins also despises both men as well.

Drew McIntyre Believes SummerSlam Match Should Main Event

While speaking to Busted Open Radio about his SummerSlam match, Drew McIntyre wished good luck to any match following them at the show while also speaking about why being in a personal rivalry means so much.

“That means a lot. I heard it a few times since I got here. The fans were asked, they didn’t even know I was there, ‘What do you think the main event should be?’ They said, ‘Punk and McIntyre.’ The deep, layered storytelling we can do it.”

“Personal rivalries is where it’s at. That’s where the money is at. That’s what makes people feel. If they’re feeling something out of this Punk and McIntyre feud, they should because it’s real. It does mean a lot to me. If anyone is on after us, good luck, folks.”

On the final episode of WWE Raw before SummerSlam, Drew McIntyre and CM Punk went face to face to vent about the match while Seth Rollins made it clear that he’ll be a referee with relaxed rules.

You can watch WWE SummerSlam, streaming live on Saturday, August 3, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on Peacock in the United States and on WWE Network everywhere else.
