Drew McIntyre Believes There’s A “Certain Magic” With WWE Rival

Drew McIntyre

Drew McIntyre knows that he has incredible chemistry with one of his biggest on-screen WWE rivals.

The rivalry that Drew McIntyre had with CM Punk in 2024 is the stuff of legend because it will always be remembered by WWE fans. As fans think about 2024, that rivalry has won numerous awards as the best of the year and it will be remembered as one of the best WWE rivalries of all time.

A big reason why the rivalry between Drew McIntyre and CM Punk worked so well is that McIntyre had a lot of pent-up frustration with Punk based on what happened earlier in their careers during Punk’s first run in WWE.

There were a lot of personal things said between the two men. There was a lot of talking because Punk couldn’t wrestle for six months due to a torn triceps, so when they finally got into the ring at SummerSlam, there was a lot of anticipation. McIntyre that first match, Punk won the next match and then it was time for Hell in a Cell.

The Hell in a Cell match between McIntyre and Punk at Bad Blood was considered by many people to be the WWE Match of the Year that lived up to the hype. Both men were bloody, there were a lot of weapons and Punk was able to get the win.

In an interview with Daily Mail, Drew McIntyre spoke about his rivalry with Punk and the creative process that went into it.

“With the Punk process, having so much real feeling, so much material, and not just my ideas… obviously creative are just absolutely on fire, and with Hunter leading the charges, setting these awesome shots up for me, all I have to do is put it in the back of the net.

It was an interesting and fun process, and it’s better than any therapy in the world. I don’t need a therapist to talk to, I’ve got a microphone every week, because you see some of the stuff I say, especially these days, even talking about my my personal tragedies and the likes I sounded out on TV. And during the Punk stuff, I was sounding out a lot of feelings when he came back eventually and started saying his piece.”

Drew McIntyre On Rivalry With CM Punk: “I Didn’t Hold Back”

The rivalry between Drew McIntyre and CM Punk brought out the best of both men because it felt very real for the audience watching at home. McIntyre also admitted that they had a lot of chemistry together.

“As much as we have certain feelings towards each other, we both are aware we’ve got certain magic with each other. It’s a tale as old as time. The more people have a genuine disdain for each other, people can truly feel it. And if you’re actually good at your job, like we are, it does create magic. And the whole process was magic, and the cell itself was a match that we talked about forever.

I will say, however my feelings are towards him, I went completely gangbusters for him. I didn’t hold back. On TV, I can only go so far, but, on social, but it’s my social. You can’t tell me what to do. I went overboard. And the company could have asked me to pull back if they wanted me to, and I’d have said, ‘No, it’s my social’. But I went at him and went at him.

And I’ve done that with a couple of people, and they have got a boo boo face. Not that I care, but he didn’t. He ate it like a man, and then came back with what he had to say. So I’ll give him that.”

Next up for Drew McIntyre is a match on the January 20th edition of Raw against Seth Rollins, who Drew beat at WrestleMania 40 to win the World Heavyweight Title. Those two men have also declared that they will be in the Royal Rumble joining Roman Reigns, John Cena, CM Punk, and others.
