Donald Trump Thinks Netflix/WBD Deal “Could Be A Problem”
WWE Hall of Famer and US President Donald Trump has had his say on Netflix’s deal to acquire WBD, and it might not be as straightforward as first thought.
Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced a deal for the streaming giant to acquire WBD. It was noted that, including current debt, the deal was worth a total $82.7 billion.
From a wrestling point of view, fans were quick to note that Netflix began a multi-year deal with WWE at the start of 2025, while WBD owns TBS and TNT, the networks that have shown AEW programming in the US since Tony Khan’s company was formed in 2019.
PWInsider reported that “Netflix is not purchasing the linear channels owned by Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). Those channels will be spun off into a new, separate publicly traded company known as Discovery Global.” Those channels include TBS and TNT (the home of AEW), as well as other channels like CNN, The Discovery Channel, HGTV, The Food Network, and so on.
But it seems Donald Trump isn’t so sure about the deal at all.
Donald Trump Unsure Over Netflix Deal
At a recent event in Washington, D.C., Trump was quoted by the BBC as saying that Netflix has a “very big market share” and that the combined size of the new firm “could be a problem.”
The competition division of the US Justice Department could suggest the deal violates the law if the combined businesses account for too much of the streaming market.
The Writers’ Guild of America’s East and West branches released a statement after news of the merger came to light, indicating their opposition to it. The union noted that the merger would “eliminate jobs, push down wages, worsen conditions for all entertainment workers, raise prices for consumers, and reduce the volume and diversity of content for all viewers.”
