Dominik Mysterio Wins WWE NXT Gold In Controversial Fashion

For the first time in his career, Dominik Mysterio is a singles champion in WWE and it would certainly count as a “dirty” win too.

The Judgment Day already has Rhea Ripley as the Women’s World Champion. Finn Balor will get a shot at Seth Rollins once again to try to become the World Heavyweight Champion and Damian Priest is waiting in the wings as Senor Money in the Bank. Now, Dominik Mysterio has singles gold too.

On the July 18th edition of NXT, the main event of the show saw the fighting NXT North American Champion Wes Lee defending the championship against Dominik Mysterio.

It was a match that was set up one week earlier when “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio and Rhea Ripley interrupted a Wes Lee interview with Dominik mentioning how Wes loved to do open challenges. Wes replied saying he hadn’t done one of those in months, but since Wes is a fighting champion, he agreed to the match.

Wes Lee went into the NXT North American Champion as the longest-reigning holder of that title ever. The title has only been around for five years, but Lee holding it for 269 days was really impressive.

In the match between Dominik and Wes, they had a competitive battle in the main event spot. Lee was in full control after hitting a Phoenix Splash off the top. That’s when Finn Balor of The Judgment Day showed up. Balor distracted the referee. Damian Priest tried to hit Lee with the North American Title, but Lee hit Priest with a Cardiac Kick. When Lee was poised to do more, Rhea Ripley hit him with her Women’s World Title without the referee seeing it. Balor dropped down, Dominik crawled over and Dominik covered Wes for the pinfall win. The NXT fans were shocked by it.

For the 26-year-old Dominik Mysterio, it’s his first singles title win in WWE and it happened in his first televised NXT singles match. Dominik was also a Smackdown Tag Team Champion with his father Rey Mysterio in 2021 as well.

During a WWE Digital Exclusive, Ripley spoke about her Latino Heat getting the big win.

“You’re talking to greatness here. You’re talking to my Latino heat, ‘Dirty’ Dom himself. He’s already surpassed his father, deadbeat dad, and he’s just gonna growing, and growing, and growing, and he’s gonna take over this business. Because he’s part of the Judgment Day, and the Judgment Day, we run all of the WWE.”

As for “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio, he bragged about his success in NXT.

“Thank you Mami. You’re definitely correct about all that, and now that I can actually speak and not get interrupted by a bunch of deadbeats and has-beens or whatever’s out there, I am the new NXT North American Champion, and now that I think about it, I’m 2-0 here in NXT. Your boy ‘Dirty Dom’ is undefeated, and with the Judgment Day and Mami by my side, it looks like it’s gonna stay that way,”

What this means for the NXT North American Title match at Great American Bash is unknown right now. Mustafa Ali will likely face Dominik Mysterio as the NXT North American Champion, but WWE certainly could add Wes Lee to the match to make it a triple threat. The NXT Great American Bash takes place on July 30th.
