Dave Meltzer Claims He Overrates WWE
Dave Meltzer has been left so blown away by one NJPW match that he’s realised he’s been overrating WWE bouts.
Dave Meltzer’s star ratings have become – bizarrely – one of the most polarizing things in wrestling. Some fans feel he’s biased towards certain companies and stars while others swear by the ratings and think they’re a fair assessment of bouts.
Since AEW was formed in 2019, Tony Khan’s company has attained 32 matches rated at five stars or above while in the same time period WWE achieved that rating on just 9 bouts – 4 in NXT and 5 on the main roster.
Both companies pale in comparison to New Japan Pro-Wrestling, however, which has the most five star or above rated matches in history with a whopping 97. And it sounds like one more could be on the way.
Dave Meltzer Thinks NJPW Not The Same Thing As WWE
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer claimed that after watching the G1 match between El Phantasmo and Konosuke Takeshita he was left so blown away that he realised he overrates WWE and doesn’t think anything on SummerSlam or Raw could compare to this NJPW classic:
When I watched that match, it was like they are on a different level. I was thinking about how good the Monday show was, it was a good angle show, and some of the matches were good, and some of the matches at SummerSlam were good.
Then I watch that match and it’s like man I overrate WWE something fierce because compared to this they’re not even the same thing. These guys were so incredible.
Konosuke Takeshita picked up the win over El Phanstasmo to move onto 8 points in B Block which is led by Jeff Cobb on 10.
