Darby Allin Accepts High Stakes Challenge By Top AEW Star
Darby Allin has agreed to a huge match at AEW Dynamite Grand Slam against one of the biggest names in AEW history.
The fourth-annual AEW Dynamite Grand Slam episode from Arthur Ashe Stadium is taking place on September 25th in New York City. It is arguably the biggest episode of Dynamite of the year.
On the July 26th episode of AEW Rampage, there was a Royal Rampage battle royal match that was won by Darby Allin with a huge reward. That victory by Allin meant that he would get to challenge the AEW World Champion at Dynamite Grand Slam.
However, that’s not going to happen now. That’s because plans changed on the September 11th edition of Dynamite when Darby Allin called out former AEW World Champion Jon Moxley to the ring. Moxley was joined by Marina Shafir during the promo segment in the ring.
Allin spoke to Moxley about how much he respects him.
“I want to tell you a story that I’ve never told. My first year in wrestling, I looked for a hero. Every time I found that person, they showed me how fake they were. They showed me that their dignity could be bought, but not you, Jon, and that’s when I knew I wanted to be just like you.
“You love this industry. Where did we first meet, Jon? It was in a high school gym on the independents. I lost that match, but I gained the confidence that I belonged in a ring with a person like you. I could never do what you did to Bryan Danielson. So what do you want? Why are you calling me out?”
Moxley mentioned Allin earned an AEW World Title shot at Dynamite Grand Slam on September 25th and said that the AEW World Champion (Bryan Danielson) is indisposed now. Moxley said that it’s a good thing. Moxley told Allin he’s not ready, but he’s going to need Allin to hand over that title shot to Moxley.
In response, Allin wondered if Moxley had been dropped on his head or if he’d been drinking again. Allin told Moxley he didn’t earn this because Allin earned it. Allin dared Moxley to do something about it.
This led to Moxley playing some mind games by sucking up to Allin. Moxley said he believes in Allin and loves him while saying that he has always had Allin’s back. Moxley said that he had never lied to Allin. Moxley said that title shot is going to be his and this time he’s going to teach Allin that lesson the hard way.
At that point, Darby Allin had heard enough and he accepted the challenge.
“Grand Slam? I accept. I don’t know what you’re trying to do around here but if you’re trying to burn AEW to the ground, don’t be surprised when I pull you into the fire.” (H/T AEW)
After the promo, AEW made it official by announcing that at Dynamite Grand Slam, Darby Allin will put his AEW World Title opportunity on the line against Jon Moxley.
AEW Considering Darby Allin As World Champion
The match at Grand Slam will be a tough test for the former TNT Champion Allin, who is going up against a former three-time AEW World Champion like Moxley.
According to some recent backstage reports, AEW management is very high on Darby Allin and have considered putting the World Title on him.
If Allin beats Moxley to hold onto the AEW World Title shot, it’s possible that AEW will give him the title match at the WrestleDream PPV, which is on October 12th in Tacoma, Washington. What’s unique about that show is that Washington state is where AEW World Champion Bryan Danielson and Darby Allin are from.
