Darby Allin Criticized For AEW Dynamite Promo
Darby Allin spoke about the wrong thing on AEW Dynamite, according to some wrestling critics.
At AEW WrestleDream, Darby Allin beat Jon Moxley in a violent I Quit Match thanks to Allin’s good friend Sting showing up and taking care of Moxley’s friends in the Death Riders group.
During an in-ring promo on the AEW Dynamite after WrestleDream, Darby Allin did a promo where he mentioned people were saying he could never be the face of this company because he could get himself killed, like when he climbed Mount Everest. Allin shouted that he is willing to go further than anybody, and he would die for this place. To end the promo, Allin said that as long as the Death Riders are breathing, Darby Allin isn’t far behind.
On a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer spoke about Allin’s promo. According to them, Allin said the wrong thing when he addressed people who doubted his Mount Everest climb.
Alvarez: “Darby Allin comes down to the ring. He says people said I was irresponsible for climbing Everest because I could have died. That would have been bad PR.
Meltzer: “Man, I gotta say this. Do not respond to Twitter. This is like the people who, you know, believe me, a lot of people said that, but they were all people in bad faith. It’s not like anyone seriously. I mean it’s like…it’s like…there were people, of course, who criticized Darby Allin for leaving, you know, when the company needs him, so he could go climb Mount Everest.
And look, I know a lot of people who…who thought Tony (Khan) shouldn’t have let him. But you know, the, he was actually using, like, grifter criticism, you know, in his promo. And it’s kind of like, dude, don’t even give them the time of day. I mean, you can address certain aspects of it. He used the wording and that’s where it was just kind of like, man, don’t even go there.”
It’s worth noting that there are literally hundreds of people who have died climbing Mount Everest, so there is a lot of risk involved in what Allin accomplished earlier this year.
Darby Allin Would Be Open To Turning Heel In AEW
Even though he’s never been an AEW World Champion yet, the former TNT Champion Darby Allin has been one of the most popular babyfaces in AEW over the last six years. Regarding a potential heel turn, Darby Allin seems like he would be okay with it, and even knows what kind of heel he would be.
“You know, honestly, it’s just wherever the wind takes me, and I feel a lot of fans, they’re always like, ‘Darby! You don’t have to go crazy anymore to impress us.’ I’m like, ‘I’m not doing it for you. I’m doing it for me.’ I actually love going out there and jumping off ladders or whatever it is I get myself into.
But I also on the flip side, I do see how fast the fans forget about you. I do see how quick they move on. Say if you got an injury or something, they’re, alright, what’s the next shiny toy?
So in that sense, I could see being a heel and just straight up being like, you are so ungrateful for what it is that we do. But at the end of the day, I don’t do it for them so I feel like you can’t get mad at them for that. But, who knows? Wherever the wind takes young Darby Allin. Maybe I will go rogue.”
Despite his popularity with the fans, Darby Allin has also said that he doesn’t need the AEW World Title to feel validated in his career.
