Darby Allin Reveals Nixed Crazy Stunt For Sting’s AEW Retirement Match

Darby Allin had some crazy ideas for Sting’s AEW retirement match, which isn’t a surprise for a man who willingly dove through glass.

At the first AEW PPV of 2024 called Revolution, Darby Allin & Sting defeated The Young Bucks in a Tornado Tag Team Match to retain the AEW Tag Team Titles. It wasn’t just any sort of match because it was extra special because it was the retirement match for WWE & TNA Hall of Famer Sting.

The match saw Sting’s two sons Steven & Garrett get involved while also dressing up like their father earlier in his career. That was because the sons were attacked by The Young Bucks in the build to the match, so it was a way to get revenge.

Perhaps the most memorable moment of the match was when the daredevil Allin climbed a ladder in the ring, then jumped off with the intent to put Nick Jackson through a glass table, but Matt Jackson was there to save his brother, so Allin went back first through a plate of glass. Keep in mind that Allin was jumping off a ladder, so it was about a 20 foot fall through glass. Allin’s back was cut open and bleeding heavily because of the stunt.

While talking to Superstar Crossover, Darby Allin spoke about his mindset going into that infamous glass dive.

“That was my sole idea (using glass during Sting’s final match). I think that I was like, ‘Man, this is Sting’s last match. You only get one shot at this. We have to go balls to the wall, all out crazy. What can we do?’ And then it’s like, I just thought of that. I don’t know why that but I just thought of that.”

As he continued, Allin revealed that he also had plans to use fire in the match although he realized the insane glass spot was probably more than enough.

“Well, there was ideas of fire. But… I think the glass was pretty much — there’s no way of faking glass. Unless you use sugar glass but, I ain’t gonna play with that.”

“Give me the good stuff and I think with wrestling, everything I do in wrestling, there’s no holes through it, you can’t see through it. Me getting thrown down a flight of steps at Daily’s Place by Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky, that sucked. That’s cement stairs. But I don’t want anyone to just, ‘Ah, there was a padding.’ Nah. No.”

The Sting retirement was praised heavily by fans and critics around the world, so it’s fair to say that Alin’s insane exploits were appreciated.

Darby Allin Loses Guaranteed AEW World Title Shot On Dynamite

In the main event of AEW Dynamite Grand Slam, which is one of AEW’s biggest shows of the year, Darby Allin faced Jon Moxley in a high-stakes match with an AEW World Title shot on the line.

Allin earned the AEW World Title shot months earlier by winning a Royal Rampage Match, but he willingly gave up the title shot to face Moxley, who outsmarted Allin by getting an AEW World Title shot even though Moxley didn’t wrestle in AEW for over three months.

The match didn’t end well for Allin since Moxley beat him with a Death Rider DDT off the top rope for the decisive win.
