WWE Cancels SummerSlam Weekend Event That Cody Rhodes Was Advertised For

Cody Rhodes

Cody Rhodes has one fewer appearance to make during WWE SummerSlam weekend.

During WrestleMania 41 weekend in Las Vegas, WWE hired comedian Tony Hinchcliffe to host a “Roast of WrestleMania” that wouldn’t be filmed or aired anywhere. It was only for the people in attendance.

At the event, there were a lot of personal shots taken at people in WWE, including Nia Jax mocking Charlotte Flair for being divorced for a third time. Some people may have liked, but the event itself did receive some criticism.

An event called WWE Late Night (featuring Tony Hinchcliffe) was promoted for SummerSlam weekend on Saturday, August 2nd in Englewood, New Jersey, with a 10:30 p.m. ET start time, meaning it would take place after SummerSlam that night.

The former WWE Champion Cody Rhodes was advertised for WWE Late Night as a way to sell tickets for the event. However, that didn’t seem to work that well.

It was reported by PWInsider that WWE Late Night has quietly been cancelled. According to the report, ticket sales were considered “light” and WWE decided to pull the plug on the event.

Cody Rhodes Wants The Real John Cena At WWE SummerSlam

At WWE SummerSlam, Cody Rhodes will have one of the biggest matches of his career when he challenges John Cena for the WWE Title. Cody earned the title shot by winning the King of the Ring tournament.

While speaking in the ring on WWE SmackDown in Cleveland, Cody Rhodes made it clear that he wanted the real John Cena at SummerSlam when they have a Street Fight with the WWE Title on the line.

I don’t want to wrestle this John Cena. I don’t want to fight a guy who didn’t even want this match in the first place. I don’t want to fight a guy who is counting the days until he is out the door. No. At SummerSlam, I want to fight the real John Cena. Because if I’m going to stand here and own it, I need to know I can go through the very best and the title that John Cena has is the biggest title in our game. It means he is the very best.

This isn’t about nostalgia. This isn’t about headlines. This is about a once-in-a-generation superstar, someone who redefined what it is to be a pro-wrestler. So John Cena, if this is your last SummerSlam, come like it is your first. I want you up there, talking to Stu the cameraman, I want you wearing the title the right way, I want you running to the ring. I want all the hustle. I want all the loyalty. And the respect? We can beat it out of each other.

WWE has also confirmed that the John Cena-Cody Rhodes match at SummerSlam will take place on Sunday, August 3rd, and is likely to be the main event that night.
