Cody Rhodes Reveals If The Rock Crossed The Line With WWE Promos

The Rock Cody Rhodes

Cody Rhodes and The Rock had a very personal rivalry going into WrestleMania 40, but did the American Nightmare think the People’s Champion went too far?

On the road to WrestleMania 40, Cody Rhodes won the Royal Rumble and that earned him a WWE Championship match against Roman Reigns. However, there were plans for The Rock to take Cody’s place until WWE listened to the fans and put Cody back in there to face Reigns.

In the WWE WrestleMania 40 Behind The Curtain documentary, The Rock claimed it was his call to step aside and let Cody Rhodes have his match with Reigns. As for Rock, he became “The Final Boss” character who was a heel that made things very personal with Rhodes.

During some of The Rock’s promos and songs, he spoke about wanting to spill Cody’s blood on a leather belt and show it to Cody’s mom Michelle. The Rock spoke about “Mama Rhodes” so much that fans chanted her name at times.

Cody Rhodes took part in a lengthy interview with Chris Van Vliet on Insight where the Undisputed WWE Champion Rhodes was asked if The Rock ever went too far with his promos.

“Depends on what line. When you’re the director of the board, you can do whatever you want. The show is not going off the air and no one’s getting fired if you do something that’s a little outrageous. That gave him free rein to develop and enter into The Final Boss. [you turned the Rock heel]. Well what happened with The Rock at WrestleMania 40 is the first time I ever believed in my own hype.”

“So first time I ever thought, oh, maybe someone from this generation did get over. Because to me, I tell my students I tell people all the time nobody today is over. Because you hear over all the time and to me over is you can’t step a foot out your house without cameras, without a moment. I just have a loftier opinion of over, John Cena is over. This is the first time I thought oh, maybe maybe that’s happening.”

The Rock Calling Cody Rhodes A “Mistake” Made Cody Feel Bad For His Sister

There was one promo that The Rock did on the March 8th edition of Smackdown where he called Cody a mistake. That led to Cody Rhodes slapping The Rock in the face. As he continued to talk about Rock’s promo insults, Cody said he felt bad for his youngest sister Teil.

“Line wise, the only line I think he crossed was he made my sister Teil non-canon because he had mentioned that I had two other siblings and that being Dustin and Kristen who are from my dad’s first marriage, which is you know, you’re not wrong that I do have them, and he was explaining [that] when he called me a mistake. But he made Teil non-canon and Teil was like the closest I have this is my original best friend. You know, so that was a little I felt bad. I felt bad for her.”

“I feel Mama Rhodes is a person who never wanted to be ever on camera. And now you got a security guard in Heathrow Terminal Airport. If he thought that was a line that he was crossed, I feel maybe it actually backfired because she’s now a part of it all.”

As for the future with The Rock, Cody Rhodes has made it clear that he still wants to face The Rock in a singles match. That match has been rumored to happen at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas next April, but nothing is confirmed at this point.
