Cody Rhodes Defending WWE Title In Massive Stipulation Match Not Seen In 12 Years (SPOILER)
Cody Rhodes will put the WWE Title on the line against Drew McIntyre in a match where McIntyre picks the stipulation.
The rivalry between the Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre has gone on for months with plenty of twists and turns.
Even though Rhodes has beaten McIntyre to retain the WWE Title multiple times, McIntyre has claimed that he was screwed out of the gold and insisted on getting another shot. McIntyre was even suspended after attacking referee Dan Engler during a Rhodes match against Aleister Black.
Since then, McIntyre and Rhodes have attacked eachother some more, including Rhodes going after McIntyre in his car.
The rivalry escalated as SmackDown GM Nick Aldis spoke to McIntyre at his home, where Aldis granted McIntyre another WWE Title match as long as he apologized to referee Engler. McIntyre only agreed if Rhodes didn’t touch him before their match. After their discussion, Cody Rhodes showed up at McIntyre’s house, and they got into a brawl in McIntyre’s front yard.
After WWE SmackDown aired this week, Drew McIntyre did a promo telling Cody Rhodes that this will be his last holiday season as the WWE Champion.
“Cody, Cody, Cody. You’re such a smug b**tard aren’t you? You tell half-truths and lies up and down, but I’ll go into those next time I’m face-to-face with you. You attacked me in the parking lot a couple of weeks ago, and all I was trying to do was come to work and do my job, and you had the audacity to attack me on my property.
I am protecting these fans from seeing you rapidly descend into madness and mess this whole thing up for everyone. Now, who knows what kind of man you really are? But soon, you won’t have the upper hand. I will.
You’re not good for that championship, you’re not fit for the job, but I am. You stayed as champion the last time we faced off because of an inept official.
You lay your hands on me, it’s all over. The title’s mine. Regardless, once you and I face each other in that ring, the title’s mine anyway. So I hope you have happy holidays, Cody, you and your family. It will be your last as the WWE Champion.”
Cody Rhodes And Drew McIntyre Heading To 3 Stages Of Hell For The WWE Title
The final WWE SmackDown of the year will air on December 26th, and that’s when McIntyre will announce the stipulation for the match: 3 Stages of Hell. From the SmackDown spoilers for the show.
Drew McIntyre came down to the ring, yelled at the referee, and was still mad about Cody attacking him at his home. It was announced that the WWE Championship match between Rhodes and McIntyre will be a Three Stages of Hell match at SmackDown in Berlin on January 9th. Drew said, “Cody, when I send you to hell, say hi to your dad for me.” Chaos ensues as they fight.
There’s no clarification yet on whether Cody and Drew actually fought at the end there or if they were kept apart by security because Drew has said Cody can’t touch him. We’ll find out when SmackDown airs on December 26th.
A Three Stages of Hell match is a Best of 3 match where the winner has to win 2 falls. The three falls typically have three separate stipulations. The last 3 Stages of Hell match was at Payback 2013, when John Cena retained the WWE Title against Ryback in a Lumberjack match, a Tables match, and an Ambulance match. That means this will be the first 3 Stages of Hell Match in 12 years.
WWE SmackDown in Berlin, Germany takes place on January 9th, and will be three hours long because it’s going back to three hours with the January 2nd episode in Buffalo. That episode of SmackDown will likely air on Netflix for international viewers about five hours before it airs in the US on USA Network.
