Cody Rhodes Recalls Promo Segment With Sami Zayn Before Elimination Chamber
Cody Rhodes has recalled what it was like when he was chasing after Roman Reigns at the same time as Sami Zayn, which led to a memorable WWE Raw promo.
Earlier this year, there was a time when the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns was dealing with multiple challengers coming after his title.
The Royal Rumble in January was a huge night for Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn. Cody won the Men’s Royal Rumble match after missing about seven months with a torn pectoral injury. Meanwhile, Zayn had enough of Reigns’ bullying in The Bloodline and nailed The Tribal Chief with a chair shot to the back.
Due to the personal story and how popular Zayn was becoming, Sami would go on to challenge Reigns for the WWE Championship at Elimination Chamber in Montreal on February 18th.
On the final Raw before Elimination Chamber on February 13th, Cody and Sami exchanged promos showing support for eachother. Some people criticized WWE doing that because Sami was likely more popular than Cody at that point, so it could have made Cody look a bit secondary. However, they did a great job of making their points well and the fans were clearly behind both guys.
Cody Rhodes Felt Comfortable Being In The Ring With Sami Zayn Before Elimination Chamber
In an interview with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, Cody Rhodes said he wanted to be in the ring with Sami to “match him” and how it brought out the best in them.
“It was being discussed around us. Why don’t we discuss it amongst us? Bruce Prichard, Ed Koskey, Triple H, they all had the idea to put us in the ring together a Barclays Center. Not run from it, let’s go towards each other and see. That was a moment where, my confidence, Sami is amazing. I don’t want to say it and throw it away. He is incredibly special. What he was doing is incredibly special. He was pulling a wagon.”
“I wanted to be there to match him and hopefully also be incredibly special. I’m a big believer in, you can have it all. We have Jey Uso, his face is everywhere, the first guy to pin Roman in X amount of days, and here he is going for the one we all want. You can’t run for it. Run towards it. I like that. It brings out the best in all of us.”
At SummerSlam last Saturday, Cody Rhodes beat Brock Lesnar clean to put an end to their four month rivalry with Cody winning two matches while Lesnar won one. After the match, Lesnar raised Cody’s hand to put him over, which is a rare thing for Lesnar to do. Clearly, it was Brock’s way of endorsing Cody as “The Guy” for WWE moving forward.
