Why Cody Rhodes Segment Didn’t Air On WWE SmackDown
A Cody Rhodes segment on WWE SmackDown didn’t air on television as originally planned.
Cody Rhodes delivered a passionate promo on WWE SmackDown in Philadelphia, just six days after taking the beating of a lifetime at Elimination Chamber. It was at Elimination Chamber when the Chamber match winner John Cena turned heel by kicking Cody in the groin after hugging him. Cena aligned with The Rock and Travis Scott, which led to that trio beating up Cody for several minutes.
During his emotional promo on SmackDown, Cody explained that he lied to his daughter about what happened to his face saying that he ran into a wall. One day Cody will tell her the truth that a man who used to say “never give up” chose to finally give up.
The promo continued with Cody saying that Cena was right there by his side as Rhodes celebrated finishing his story and capturing the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 40. Cody revealed that Cena gave him the advice that the title “Gets heavier every day” but Rhodes said it isn’t heavy enough for him yet. As he finished the promo, Cody shouted with a message for Cena: “Clearly you want some, come and get some!”
It has been reported by Fightful Select that there was supposed to be a Cody Rhodes backstage segment with R-Truth at SmackDown in Philadelphia, but it didn’t make it on the show.
As most WWE fans know, R-Truth plays a character who claims that John Cena is his childhood hero even though Truth is older than Cena and even started in WWE before Cena. It’s a silly gimmick that also makes Truth lovable because of how silly he is.
According to Fightful, the speculation backstage is that WWE chose to not do the Cody-Truth segment because it might have affected the gravity of Cody’s serious promo earlier in the show.
On the February 28th SmackDown in Toronto one night before Elimination Chamber, Cody had a comedy segment with Truth, who was enjoying the massive dressing room that The Rock got him for that night’s show.
