According to a new report, Cody Rhodes’ AEW contract expired at the end of 2021 and he has been working without one since then.

Cody Rhodes is scheduled to make his return to AEW Dynamite on January 19th. Ahead of this, it has been reported that the TNT Champion is a free agent.

The news was revealed by Fightful Select, who noted that Rhodes’ contract expired at the end of last year. This means that the ‘American Nightmare’ is now working without a contract. Cody himself has not yet responded to Fightful’s request for comment, while AEW officials said that they were not willing to discuss contracts.

During an interview with Sports Illustrated in December, Rhodes said that he saw his future with AEW, adding that he was “very optimistic” about what the future held.

“As of now, my future is with AEW. AEW would be very strange without the core members of the revolution. We (the EVP’s) all still talk. We all have this admiration for each other. I can’t see myself anywhere else, and I’m very optimistic about what the future holds.”

Cody Rhodes will return to AEW TV on the upcoming episode of Dynamite. He has been absent since the Christmas Night edition of Rampage where he defeated Sammy Guevara to become TNT Champion for the third time.

After his victory, a rematch was announced for Battle of the Belts. However, only a day before the show, Rhodes was pulled from the match. At the time, no specific reason for the change was announced, only that Rhodes wasn’t medically cleared to compete.

Rhodes later explained that he missed his scheduled defence as he and his wife Brandi were isolating with a family member who had tested positive for COVID-19.
