Cody Rhodes Reflects On Leaving AEW
Cody Rhodes has reflected on his final AEW promo on the second anniversary of when it happened.
It was two years ago on January 19th, 2022 when Cody Rhodes delivered his final promo in All Elite Wrestling. Cody spoke about CM Punk’s infamous WWE Pipebomb promo from 2011 as well as the Forbidden Door and what led to the launch of AEW in 2019 thanks to Cody and The Young Bucks making a deal with Tony Khan.
The promo also featured Cody explaining why he didn’t want to turn heel even though fans would boo him as one of AEW’s top babyfaces. Cody said the reason he won’t turn heel is that the fans were there for him when he needed them most.
At the end of the promo, Cody said he knows that Tony Khan sent a contract in the mail, but not the contract he wanted. At that point, it had become known that Cody would be a free agent soon, but many people felt like he would stay with AEW since he was one of the people who started the company.
One week later on the January 26th edition of AEW Dynamite, Sammy Guevara and Cody Rhodes had a fantastic TNT Championship Ladder match that Guevara won. Fans didn’t know it at the time, but it was Cody’s last match in AEW.
On the second anniversary of his promo, Cody Rhodes admitted on Twitter/X he was privileged to say goodbye to the AEW fans.
“I’ll always feel privileged that I got to say goodbye with these words and the match that followed. Very fun/wild crowd and a fond memory.”

It was over two months after that promo and match when Cody Rhodes returned to WWE with adrenaline in his soul to try to finish his story. Things have gone so well for Cody in his WWE return that he might have already agreed a contract extension less than two years into his new deal. That means he will be a major part of WWE for many years to come.
