Cody Rhodes Wants Lengthy Rivalry With WWE Legend
Cody Rhodes believes there’s “a lot of meat on the bone” regarding a future feud with WWE legend Randy Orton.
The Men’s WWE King of the Ring tournament concluded at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia with Cody Rhodes beating his wrestling mentor Randy Orton in the tournament finals.
As a reward for becoming King Cody, Rhodes will challenge the Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena at SummerSlam on August 2 or 3. While WWE hasn’t confirmed the date of the match yet, it’s likely going to be the Sunday main event on August 3rd.
That match at SummerSlam will be Cody’s first chance to win back the WWE Championship that he lost to Cena at WrestleMania 41. In addition to beating Orton, Cody beat his great friend Jey Uso in the Semifinals of the King of the Ring tournament.
While speaking with Undisputed, Cody Rhodes discussed the reception to his match against Jey Uso.
“I’m in the main event on Raw in this friend versus friend match against Jey Uso, and you hear people say that that is the hardest type of match, but I was incredibly proud at the reaction we got from the crowd. That was a moment.”
Cody Rhodes Envisions Rivalry With Randy Orton That Will Lead To WrestleMania Match
Regarding his history with Randy Orton, it was over 15 years ago when Cody Rhodes was a part of Orton’s group called Legacy. At the time, Cody was a young man in his early 20s who was learning a lot from Orton and others.
Because of that history with Orton, Cody thinks that he could have a lengthy feud with Orton, leading to a WrestleMania showdown.
“Randy and I have a lot of history. We could do a six-month program that leads to WrestleMania. There is a lot of meat on the bone.
It was a different type of build here with the tournament, with a whole different set of stakes. I like the stakes of the tournament with the main event of SummerSlam on the line. I think we’ll get into our history down the road, too.”
The next WWE PLE is SummerSlam from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on August 2 & 3. Here’s the lineup so far.

* WWE Championship: John Cena (c) vs. Cody Rhodes
