Cody Rhodes Crushes Kevin Owens At WWE Royal Rumble
Cody Rhodes walked out as Undisputed WWE Champion at the Royal Rumble but Kevin Owens barely walked out at all.
At Saturday Night’s Main Event, Cody Rhodes defeated Kevin Owens to hang on to his WWE Championship, but it did not come without controversy. Rhodes walked into the nostalgia-laced show with the famous Winged Eagle title belt for one night only, but it was Kevin Owens who left with that gold.
Kevin Owens had Rhodes pinned during the match but the referee had been taken out meaning that nobody was there to count the pinfall and the match continued. After Rhodes had turned things around and won, Kevin Owens sent Rhodes to the hospital with the package piledriver.
That led to a ladder match being made for the Royal Rumble with both Rhodes’ WWE Title and Kevin Owens’ Winged Eagle title being hung high above the ring.
Cody Rhodes Wins Big At The Royal Rumble
Kevin Owens walked to the ring wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the legend “The Canadian Dream Son of a Security Systems Technician” in a shot at Rhodes’ son of a plumber father, the WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes.
Owens and Rhodes went at it in a hard-hitting affair with some very wince-inducing landings on ladders for good measure. Owens was busted open and referees, officials, and Sami Zayn rushed to ringside to check on both men as the match neared its conclusion.
Rhodes and Owens ended up on the announce table and the champion blocked a package piledriver attempt before nailing Kevin Owens with an Alabama Slam through a ladder with Owens suffering a sick landing. That proved enough for Rhodes to be able to reclaim both title belts and win the match.
