How Cody Rhodes Has Been A Heel Since Day One Explained
Cody Rhodes could turn heel any day now.
At least that’s what’s being discussed since his King of the Ring Tournament victory at WWE Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia.
The win in Riyadh guaranteed Rhodes a match to face the world champion at SummerSlam.
The American Nightmare has had his eyes on reclaiming the Undisputed WWE Championship since he lost it to John Cena at WrestleMania 41.
On the July 18 SmackDown episode, Cody Rhodes and Cena had a planned contract signing segment.
However, Cena said that he felt emotionally exhausted and tried to back down from the SummerSlam clash.
A seething Rhodes unleashed fury upon the 17-time world champion, before putting him through the table and forcibly making him sign it.
He also said that the match had a stipulation, and their bout at ‘the Biggest Party of the Summer’ will be a Street Fight.
Cody Rhodes Has Always Been A Heel
WWE has been planting the seeds for Cody Rhodes’ heel turn, which only die-hard fans of sports entertainment have been able to spot.
Be it Rhodes’ segment on SmackDown with Jey Uso before their KOTR semifinals match or the final KOTR match itself against Randy Orton, the signs were all there.
Nevertheless, one wrestling veteran believes that Rhodes has been a heel since day one in WWE.
Vince Russo explained his theory about why he thought that during the latest episode of the Coach & Bro podcast.
My problem has always been from day one, Cody Rhodes is a heel. First of all, we can go back to the days of AEW. If you watched any episode of Rhodes to the Top, him and his wife, Brandy, were two of the most unlikable people I had ever seen on TV. They were downright unlikable. Why were they unlikable, Vince? Well, for instance, at the time, Brandy was pregnant. But what seemed to me more important than pregnancy at the time was getting back in the ring and competing as a wrestler. That was literally superceding her being pregnant.
But, again, I’ve said this all along with Cody Rhodes—the suits, the pocket watches, the promos talking above people’s heads. He always had this air about himself of being better than everybody else. He’s a heel. I said that from day one. He’s a heel. And, Coach, who knows if they actually make that adjustment? That may be exactly what they need to turn the creative around because I feel Cody has been miscasted as a babyface from day one. So, if Cody leans into it as a heel, this may be exactly what they need. [26:46 onwards]
WWE SummerSlam, meanwhile, will be a two-nighter for the first time in the PLE’s history, taking place on August 2 & 3.
