Why Cody Rhodes Was Forced To Cut His Mustache In WWE
Cody Rhodes has reflected on the time in his WWE career when he had a mustache and why the look didn’t work for him.
Many men in the history of professional wrestling were known for having a legendary mustache. Names like Hulk Hogan, Rick Rude, Jake Roberts, The Iron Sheik, Mean Gene Okerlund, and many others come to mind.
What about Cody Rhodes? His mustache run may not be remembered as fondly as the others.
In present-day WWE, Cody Rhodes has blonde hair, a giant American Nightmare tattoo on his neck, and when he’s not in a match, he’s usually dressed in a suit. However, there was a time in late 2012 when Cody decided to rock the mustache look with his black hair.
It’s not that uncommon for a heel wrestler, like Cody was at the time, to adopt a look that looks ridiculous to upset the fans and get heat. Some people pull it off easily, while others…not so much.
During a recent episode of his What Do You Wanna Talk About with Cody Rhodes podcast, Cody spoke to his good friend, WWE Hall of Famer Nikki Bella, about the mustache look. At the time, the Bella Twins (Nikki & Brie Bella) were in scenes with Cody and tag team partner Damien Sandow, so Cody decided to recall their history together.
“I’m so sorry you had to stand across from the period of time I had the mustache. And it was so just in person, it was different than how it looked on screen. In person, it was so little hair. And I had put Black Just for Men on it so that it stood out from a TV perspective, you know? That’s how, in the end, that’s why I had to cut it.”
Cody Rhodes Lacked Mustache Trimming Skills
As he continued, the former WWE Champion, Cody Rhodes, admitted that he didn’t have the skills to trim the mustache properly. After he didn’t like the look, he decided to shave it, and it stayed off.
“So, I didn’t have any skills on mustache trimming. So I didn’t know any. I just had a mustache from the three weeks I was away. It wasn’t much of one, so I would just… I took, like, clippers, and I above the lip didn’t really know. One time I just got a little tight, and it got in here where it was not a good look. And I was walking through the airport, and I knew, like, got to go. I can’t even sell work this has to go.”
The mustache talk continued with Cody Rhodes admitting that he’s surprised his wife Brandi Rhodes, whom he was dating at the time, stayed with him in those days when he looked ridiculous with the mustache.
“Now, today, face hair is a thing. Then it was still, like, it was in its infancy of its being reborn. Now everyone’s about their beard the beard, oil, things of that. I’m shocked when I look back, ’cause I remember Brandi we’d take pictures together and stuff.”
I feel like I’m shocked she hung in. That’s a real wrestler thing like having absurd long hair or some gimmick, whatever it may be. And you’ve got to go through life, civilian life with that. No, that’s the things we do, though.”
The clean-shaven Cody Rhodes will challenge the WWE Champion John Cena in a Street Fight at SummerSlam on Sunday, August 3rd. WWE confirmed that Cena’s final SummerSlam match will be on the second night of SummerSlam, and it’s expected to be the main event of the show.
