Cody Rhodes Won’t Finish Story At WWE WrestleMania
Cody Rhodes fans look away now as it has been suggested that his story to become WWE Universal Champion will go on past WrestleMania 40.
After a shock return to WWE at WrestleMania 38, many expected The American Nightmare to do what he set out to do and claim a world championship in short order. A serious injury took him out of action in the second half of 2022 but he re-emerged in the 2023 men’s Royal Rumble, winning the match and setting him on a date with destiny at WrestleMania 39.
Destiny had other plans in the form of Roman Reigns who defeated Rhodes in the main event to hang on to his WWE Universal Championship and he remains champion still heading into the 2024 Royal Rumble. Reigns and Rhodes running it back with a different outcome has been top of many people’s lists for WrestleMania 40 but it seems those in WWE have other plans once again.
Cody Rhodes To Miss Out On Roman Reigns Re-Match
Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated has speculated on the WrestleMania 40 card but suggested WWE sources have claimed Cody Rhodes is not set to headline the show or “finish his story” and capture championship gold:
Where does this leave Cody Rhodes? Multiple sources close to WWE Head of Creative Paul “Triple H” Levesque have indicated that Rhodes will not headline this year’s event, nor will he “finish his story” at WrestleMania. But there is still a new chapter to write with a marquee matchup to be had… against CM Punk.
Barrasso has suggested the highly-anticipated match between The Rock and Roman Reigns will keep Reigns busy with The Tribal Chief potentially continuing his never-ending reign as WWE Universal Champion.
As for who will win the men’s Rumble match, many might be surprised by Barrasso’s suggestion that it could be Gunther. However, The Ring General has been as high as second favourite to win the match with bookmakers and is currently third favourite behind Punk and Rhodes. That could mean a showdown between Gunther and a weakened World Heavyweight Champion as Seth Rollins is struggling with a serious knee injury.
Cody Rhodes and CM Punk came face-to-face on Monday Night Raw with both men vowing to win the men’s Royal Rumble and headline WrestleMania, it remains to be seen if either of them can achieve either of those goals.
