Cody Rhodes Reveals Best Advice John Cena Gave Him
Cody Rhodes has shared some of the wisdom shared with him by the great John Cena.
It is no secret that Cody Rhodes is a big fan of John Cena. The Undisputed WWE Champion Rhodes used to travel with Cena when Rhodes was a younger wrestler looking to learn more about the business from WWE’s biggest star.
Fast forward to 2025, and the two men headlined two of the biggest shows of the year. Cena won the WWE Title from Rhodes at WrestleMania 41, which led to Rhodes winning King of the Ring and then winning the WWE Title back from Cena at SummerSlam.
At WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13th, John Cena will compete in his final WWE match against Gunther, and it will be the main event of the show. Cody Rhodes will also be on the card as he faces off against NXT Champion Oba Femi in a match where neither title is on the line.
The end of Cena’s WWE career has many fans feeling nostalgic, and the same goes for WWE superstars. In a video on WWE’s YouTube channel, some of the company’s biggest names spoke about lessons they learned from Cena. For Rhodes, what Cena told him was pretty simple.
“He’s given it to numerous talent, and it sounds redundant but it’s really not. Listen to the audience. And if you do, you’ll never go wrong.”
Cody Rhodes Loved SummerSlam Match With John Cena
When looking back on the Cody Rhodes-John Cena rivalry of 2025, the WrestleMania 41 match was forgettable, while their SummerSlam clash was one of the best WWE matches of the year. That match was a 38-minute-long Street Fight that saw the two legends bust out all kinds of moves while using many weapons throughout the match.
During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, WWE Champion Cody Rhodes spoke lovingly about the SummerSlam clash with Cena, and with good reason.
“It’s MetLife, what a good time. I hate saying this, but part of the beauty of how great that match is was the lack of a match that really took place at WrestleMania in a sense. Sometimes the long game is the game.
It’s like going on last, it’s a hard spot occasionally, but the bigger picture — I treat them as the same match and then we just got to use all the bells and whistles.”
The four-match card at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13th looks like this:
- John Cena vs. Gunther in Cena’s final WWE match
- Sol Ruca vs. Bayley
- WWE World Tag Team Champions AJ Styles & Dragon Lee vs. Je’Von Evans & Leon Slater in a non-title match
- WWE Champion Cody Rhodes vs. NXT Champion Oba Femi in a non-title match
