CM Punk Was Set To Wrestle AEW Star Prior To WWE Walkout
CM Punk and Claudio Castagnoli were about to throw down in WWE prior to Punk’s departure.
As a guest on a recent episode of ‘Insight with Chris Van Vliet‘, Ring Of Honor World Champion, Claudio Castagnoli revealed that he was supposed to face former two-time AEW World Champion, CM Punk, but Punk walked out of the company before the pair could lock horns.
“Here’s a fun fact. Do you know when the last time I was supposed to wrestle Punk was? The day he walked out. He told me, I saw him in the hallway as he was on his way out.”
In case you’ve somehow missed it, Punk has been involved in quite the controversy as of late. The now-former AEW World Champion decided to air out his grievances following the AEW All Out pay-per-view, earlier this month. Punk would take shots at Kenny Omega, Matt, and Nick Jackson of The Elite as well as other AEW stars and executives. Following Punk’s remarks, he engaged in a physical altercation with The Elite as well as other members of the AEW roster and personnel members. The fallout from the spat saw Punk and The Elite all be stripped of their respective titles to pair with suspensions all around.
However, Punk was injured during his title match with Jon Moxley at All Out and will be out for a lengthy period of time following the ensuing surgery, regardless of the suspension.
Meanwhile, Castagnoli recently successfully defended the ROH World Title over Dax Harwood of FTR during the 9/9 episode of AEW Rampage.
