CM Punk Gets Emotional Addressing John Cena’s WWE Retirement
CM Punk comments on John Cena’s retirement.
Cena will retire from in-ring WWE competition after his final match on December 13, 2025, at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Punk recently appeared on the Up and Adams Show, where he addressed Cena’s retirement and compared him to Ice Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. He also got a little emotional while saying that he’s happy to witness Cena’s retirement.
“Cena is, I think, our Wayne Gretzky. I’ve been saying he’s somebody who’s just kind of held it down for a very, very long time.
And for him to wrap it up, I think, is like watching him exit with such style and grace and dignity has been has been a real treat.
We don’t get to often say goodbye in real time to our sports heroes, so this is the one time we can,” Punk said.
CM Punk Wants Gunther To Face John Cena In His Final Match
During the same show, CM Punk was also asked to pick Cena’s final opponent. Punk replied that Gunther would be the best fit to retire The Last Real Champion.
“I don’t know if it’s perfect, but it’s looking like Gunther because I’ve been in the ring with him, and I know what he can do, and I don’t know who else in the tournament can beat him right now,” Punk said.
Gunther returned to WWE on the November 17, 2025, episode of Monday Night after being absent since losing the World Heavyweight Championship to CM Punk at SummerSlam in August 2025. He was sidelined due to a legitimate nose injury.
His return match was against Je’Von Evans in the Last Time Is Now tournament, which he won.
On the following Raw episode, he defeated Carmela Hayes to advance in the tournament. Solo Sikoa also defeated Penta to become a semi-finalist in the tournament this past Monday.
