CM Punk Admits Hell In A Cell Became A Toy In WWE
CM Punk is looking to right a major wrong at Bad Blood.
For the first few years of its existence, the Hell In A Cell match was something to be feared. It was reserved only for the most heated of rivalries and resulted in some of the most violent clashes WWE has ever seen. In the process, The Undertaker, Mick Foley, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, and more only added to their legend.
However, in 2009 the landscape changed dramatically when the company created the Hell In A Cell pay-per-view. This saw multiple cell matches on the same card, sparking criticism from fans who believed the shine was taken off the matches, and rivalries didn’t merit the violence that came with the match.
The final Hell In A Cell event took place in June 2022 and featured the famous bout between Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins.
CM Punk Critical Of Former WWE Policy
During an appearance on No-Contest Wrestling, CM Punk discussed his return to WWE and upcoming Hell In A Cell match with Drew McIntyre at Bad Blood. While discussing the match, Punk admitted WWE lost its way with the creation of the Hell In A Cell PPV, and he’s determined to return to the match to its former glory.
I feel like I have to deliver a classic. And I have to stay true to myself, my beliefs of what good wrestling is, and that cell that I feel like as a company we’ve gotten away from for so long. Where it just became a toy. Like, ‘We’re just going to have a pay-per-view, call it Hell in a Cell, and everyone’s going to go inside and have matches.’
When in reality that should be presented as the most dangerous, diabolical thing that any wrestler would ever want to do,
I want to bring it back to what it’s supposed to be. I don’t want to have a cell that needs a match, I want to have a match that needs the cell. And I feel like me and Drew have done that. Like, there’s no other way — there’s no other way to settle this.”
During the same interview, CM Punk revealed his WWE contract was still being finalised during the main event of Survivor Series 2023. Shortly after the final bell, Punk made his remarkable return to the company.
Punk’s return came less than three months after his very public firing from AEW.
