CM Punk Reportedly Said “F*ck That” To Putting The Rock Over In A Promo
A former WWE writer has claimed that CM Punk was seriously unimpressed one time he was handed a promo which would have involved him putting The Rock over.
Matt McCarthy was involved in the writing when CM Punk was in the midst of his milestone 434-day WWE Championship run. After running through plenty of the top names in the company, Punk was set to face The Rock at the 2013 Royal Rumble.
As you’d expect from both wordsmiths, there were a number of iconic promos in the buildup to the match including Punk’s ‘Boxing With God‘ speech.
Matt McCarthy has now explained that it wasn’t all plain sailing during this period, especially with one particular promo. He recalls Punk being handed a script and rejected having to put The Rock over outright.
I remember Punk being handed a promo about The Rock and him refusing to [say it]. He’s like, ‘So now I’ve got to f***ing put over The Rock? F*** that.’ I remember that happening. I don’t recall anyone walking out per se.
As it transpired, ‘The Great One’ would be the man to end CM Punk’s lengthy reign at the Rumble. At this point their paths to WrestleMania 29 diverged, with ‘The Voice Of The Voiceless’ being the last man to fall victim to The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at ‘The Showcase Of The Immortals, whilst The Rock would lose his title to John Cena.
