Chris Jericho Unsure If He Came Up With Classic WWE Catchphrase Or If It Was From A Movie
Chris Jericho has spoken out about one of his favorite WWE catchphrases, which is also part of a cult classic movie.
Over the last 30 years in pro wrestling, Chris Jericho has come up with a lot of catchphrases that many of his fans will remember forever.
Whether it was in WCW, WWE, or AEW, Jericho has consistently been one of the best talkers in the business, consistently finding ways to stay relevant by coming up with creative things to say.
In the 1999 film Office Space, considered by many to be a cult classic, there’s a character named Michael Bolton, who shares the same name as a famous singer. While he’s talking about himself, Bolton uses the phrase “ass clown” when saying that there was nothing wrong with his name until the singer came along.
There *was* nothing wrong with it… until I was about twelve years old and that no-talent ass clown became famous and started winning Grammys.
While Office Space wasn’t a huge box office success, it gained popularity among fans on cable TV due to its clever script and unique characters.
Did Chris Jericho Come Up With “Ass Clown” Or Did Office Space?
When WWE fans think of the phrase, “Ass Clown,” they might think of Chris Jericho, who used it as a way to insult opponents. Jericho even had a shirt with the “Ass Clown” phrase on it.
For fans of Chris Jericho, pro wrestling, and Office Space, Jericho spoke to Bionic Buzz in a new interview, where he addressed the “Ass Clown” phrase and whether it was his creation or if it originated from Office Space.
“Ass clown came from, there was a movie called Office Space. But I don’t know if I took that from the movie. I’m not saying they took it from me, but I seem to remember saying it just stringing two stupid words together, Ass Clown.
So I didn’t steal it from Office Space. But subconsciously, maybe I heard it and didn’t realize it. But either way, either it was Office Space or Chris Jericho. So we’ll go with a combination of the two.”

At the age of 54, Chris Jericho is still involved in pro wrestling while also focusing on his music career.
While Chris Jericho remains under contract with AEW, where he has worked since January 2019, he hasn’t appeared on AEW TV since April. There is a belief among people in AEW that Jericho wants to return to WWE and that his AEW run is over; however, this hasn’t been confirmed.
If Jericho does return to WWE it would likely be in January 2026, perhaps at the Royal Rumble, since it is believed that his AEW contract runs until the end of this year.
