Charlotte Flair Didn’t Have Much Choice For WWE Ring Name

Charlotte Flair has opened up about how WWE essentially dictated her ring name.

For more than a decade, Charlotte Flair has established herself as one of the greatest women’s wrestlers in WWE history. Flair has the most WWE Women’s Titles in company history with 14, and that doesn’t even count the two she won in NXT.

In addition to her singles success, Flair is a current Women’s Tag Team Champion with Alexa Bliss. That pairing began as two veterans who didn’t always get along, but now they have become the best of friends while regularly successfully defending their titles.

As the daughter of two-time WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair, who many people consider one of the greatest wrestlers ever, Charlotte has had big shoes to fill, and she has done an admirable job of it.

During an interview with Post Run High, Charlotte Flair spoke about how she pitched some names early in her career, but they were not approved.

“I pitched a few names. I pitched Elizabeth Reid. I loved Miss Elizabeth and then my little brother’s name was Reid.”

Paying tribute to her brother is something that Charlotte loves doing since he died tragically in 2013 at the age of 25.

“They were like, ‘No, your dad’s from Charlotte. We’re naming you Charlotte.'”

Charlotte Flair Wasn’t Given The Flair Last Name Right Away

For many years, WWE would only refer to Charlotte as just that name without the “Flair” part at the end of it, but eventually, they settled on the Flair last name as well.

“I could have gone by Ashley Flair. Probably, being Ric’s kid, it was like, ‘We’re gonna give her a stage name, like, not to be Ashley Flair.

When I first started, I wasn’t Charlotte Flair. I was just Charlotte. They didn’t attach my last name until, like, four or five years later.”

On the September 26th edition of WWE SmackDown, Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss were confronted by NXT’s Sol Ruca and Zaria, who were looking for a Women’s Tag Team Title shot. Flair and Bliss told the NXT wrestlers they had to do more to earn it.
