Charlotte Flair has discussed her return to WWE television and says she only found out she’d be winning the SmackDown Women’s Title at the very last minute.

Charlotte Flair missed the second half of 2022 from WWE television, making her big return on the final SmackDown of the year to dethrone Ronda Rousey as SmackDown Women’s Champion.

Speaking on the Out of Character podcast, Charlotte Flair explained that she found out she’d be returning to WWE over Christmas, just days before her appearance:

“Right around Christmas. I really wanted to come back at Survivor Series, but I had just finished getting my last stitches out. So he was like, ‘don’t push it.’ I got the greenlight the week of New Year’s.”

Flair then explained that she only found out about her title win when she got to SmackDown, after breaking the cardinal rule of a wrestler and not bringing her gear to the show:

“I didn’t find out I was winning the title until I got there. I didn’t have gear with me. My amazing cleaning lady brought me my gear. I should have known better. I’m coming to a wrestling show, I just brought my outfit.”

“I thought it was just going to be a walkout surprise because I had been gone for so long, I really didn’t need to be any major fireworks, but when I got there they were like, ‘You need your gear.’ I got the call at maybe 5ish that I needed gear, right before I got to the arena. She got to the arena around 7, 7:15.”

Charlotte Flair will have hands full at WrestleMania 39 after Rhea Ripley confirmed she was challenging The Queen following Ripley’s 2023 Royal Rumble win.
