Bruce Prichard Explains Why Turning WWE Hall Of Famer Heel Was Perfect Timing

In a recent episode of his “Something To Wrestle” podcast, WWE Executive Bruce Prichard delved into the controversial heel turn of WWE Hall of Famer Sgt. Slaughter in 1990. This transformation saw Slaughter become an Iraqi sympathiser, a move that Prichard believes was perfectly timed given the political climate of the era.

Prichard explained that the decision was heavily influenced by the prevailing sentiments towards Saddam Hussein and the Middle East. During this period, there was a surge of patriotism in the United States, fuelled by geopolitical tensions.

Because of the sentiments towards Saddam Hussein, the sentiments towards the Middle East at that time, there was a new feeling of patriotism in the country.

The idea was to take a beloved American hero and challenge the audience’s perception of patriotism. Slaughter’s turn was designed to provoke and engage fans by questioning their own sense of national pride.

What if you take one of their own and he feels that no, your patriotism isn’t true, you’re not a real patriot because you’re not out there fighting.

This storyline was a departure from traditional wrestling narratives, as it was rooted in real-world anti-American sentiment. The choice of Sgt. Slaughter, a character synonymous with American values, made the turn even more impactful.

It was different than anything that had traditionally been done in the business. It had not been done, and certainly not been done with anyone the likes of Sgt. Slaughter who was the ultimate American babyface.

The heel turn of Sgt. Slaughter remains one of the most memorable and controversial storylines in WWE history, illustrating the power of wrestling to reflect and amplify societal tensions.
