Bret Hart Refutes WWE Hall Of Famer's Claims That He Was One Of The Worst World Champions

WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart has responded firmly to comments made by fellow Hall of Famer Jake “The Snake” Roberts, who once criticised Hart and Shawn Michaels as two of the worst world champions in WWE history.

Bret Hart addressed the claims during a 2020 episode of his Confessions of The Hitman podcast, where he stood by his legacy and record as a champion.

I take exception.

Hart said, addressing Roberts’ remarks.

Jake Roberts is one of those guys who a few months ago said something about– he made a stupid comment about the two worst champions there ever were, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels. And he made some references that we didn’t draw. I don’t know if that’s a fair view.

Hart countered Roberts’ assertion by highlighting key events from his career that showcased his drawing power, including landmark matches and record-setting audiences.

If you look at any of the WrestleManias – WrestleMania 12 – you can’t tell me if you look at the crowd, that I didn’t draw. I mean, it was huge buy rates, and it was a packed arena. Even Wembley with Bulldog had over 80,000 fans there.

Hart also emphasised his international success, which he believes sets him apart from many of his peers. While acknowledging Hulk Hogan’s unmatched appeal in the United States, Hart argued his global influence is undeniable.

I wrestled in front of 100,000 people in India in 1994. We drew, but maybe in the United States, you could argue that I didn’t draw in the way that Hulk Hogan drew. But, I mean, who did? Hulk Hogan was a phenomenon.

Why Did Bret Hart’s Iconic 1991 SummerSlam Match Almost Never Happen?

Bret Hart’s iconic 1991 SummerSlam match against “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig almost didn’t happen due to Hennig’s back injury that required surgery. Hart said that the original plan was for Hennig to vacate the title and for Hart to win it at SummerSlam but when Hennig learned that Hart was to be his successor he put his surgery on hold so he could compete in the match as he had a huge amount of respect for Hart.
