Bret Hart Names The Last Great Match Of His WWE Career

Bret Hart

Bret Hart has explained what match he feels was the last great one he ever had in his WWE career as he reflects on a dramatic classic from SummerSlam.

Bret Hart has no shortage of great matches from an illustrious career that saw him capture the WWE Championship five times. Having shared the ring with the likes of Mr Perfect, Roddy Piper, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, Owen Hart, and Steve Austin, Hart earned his nickname of The Excellence of Execution every time he entered the ring.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, The Hitman has now given his thoughts on the last great match he believes he had in his WWE career. The bout in question was a controversial SummerSlam main event that saw him defend the WWE Title against The Undertaker with Shawn Michaels as the guest referee.

If Hart lost then he could no longer wrestle in the US while Michaels faced the same consequence if he failed to call things down the middle. Bret Hart pushed Michaels into action when he spat in HBK’s face leading to Michaels wildly swinging a chair that ended up smashing The Undertaker in the head and Michaels had no choice but to count the pinfall while Hart pinned The Deadman.

Bret Hart Shares Message From The Undertaker

As Hart explained, the SummerSlam bout was one of the favourites from his career:

That was my last great WWF match ever, and I’m always grateful for that moment with Undertaker. We were two pros who really had respect for each other and enjoyed one another, and we loved working together.

He told me one time, ‘Wrestling you is one of the few chances I have to show I can wrestle.’ That meant a lot. Our match was really well planned out and orchestrated, and that was one of my favorite matches of all-time.

Bret Hart continued on as WWE Champion after 1997’s SummerSlam while a feud was ignited between The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels. That led to the first-ever Hell In A Cell bout that Michaels won after Kane debuted and attacked his brother.

As a result, Shawn Michaels earned a WWE Title shot against Bret Hart at Survivor Series 1997 and history was made in Montreal with the most infamous match in company history that to an extent defined both men’s careers.

The SummerSlam match has been brought to mind given the current WWE storyline between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre that sees Seth Rollins named as their special referee for the match that will take place on the 27th anniversary of Hart’s encounter with The Undertaker.
