Bret Hart Wanted Different Stipulation For Legendary WWE Match
Bret Hart wanted something different for one of his classic WWE Title matches.
It was 30 years ago at SummerSlam 1994 when Bret Hart successfully defended the WWE Championship against his younger brother Owen Hart. It’s a match that is remembered fondly as one of the best steel cage matches in WWE history.
What made the match unique is that it didn’t take place inside the silver steel cage that most wrestling fans know. Instead, the match took place in the blue bar steel cage that WWE used sometimes in the 1980s and 1990s.
Instead of having a bloody steel cage match, the Hart Brothers put on a technically sound Steel Cage Match that saw Bret retain the WWE Title over his brother Owen by escaping the cage first.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Bret Hart revealed that he didn’t want to have a Steel Cage Match with Owen. Instead, they wanted a Ladder Match. However, WWE didn’t do that because Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels had a classic Ladder Match at WrestleMania 10 earlier in 1994.
“We never wanted to have a cage match. The truth was, I would have liked to have had a ladder match against Owen. We couldn’t do that because Shawn Michaels had used the idea at WrestleMania [against Scott Hall].”
Bret went on to talk about how they didn’t want to have a bloody cage match.
“A cage is generally a gory, hardcore match with a lot of blood. I didn’t want to have that kind of match with Owen. We were two brothers feuding, but we didn’t want to across like we’d kill each other to win. We didn’t go the blood route, but nearly every great cage match has blood.”
SummerSlam Match Between Bret Hart And Owen Hart Was A “Beautiful Story”
Even though Bret Hart didn’t want to have the Steel Cage Match with his brother Owen, he loved the match and believed it was a beautiful story.
“The way I described it in my book is a cage match without blood is a chocolate sundae without the chocolate sauce, but Owen and I never wanted the image of us bleeding on each other, so we went without blood. ”
“We told the wrestlers’ story. We wanted to tell the suspense of getting in and out of the cage, and we were proud of the match. I thought it was a beautiful story.”
In another recent Bret Hart interview, he spoke about how he didn’t like taking the scissors kick by Booker T because it hurt when landing on the mat.
