Blake Monroe believes NXT is the perfect introduction.

After losing to “Timeless” Toni Storm in the Hollywood Ending at AEW Revolution, Mariah May allowed her contract to expire and left the company. May’s run with and then opposite Storm has been hailed as one of the greatest stories in AEW history, but come March, she felt it was time for a change.

Following three months out of the spotlight, May arrived in WWE, debuting on the June 3 edition of NXT under the name Blake Monroe.

Since then, she’s battled with Jordynne Grace, before more recently turning her attention to Sol Ruca and the Women’s North American Title.

Blake Monroe Looking To Build In NXT

During a new interview on The Ringer Wrestling Show, Monroe opened up about why she was content to start her WWE career with the developmental brand after being one of the biggest stars in AEW.

The British star explained that she felt starting in NXT would provide her with the perfect platform to introduce herself to a WWE audience who likely hadn’t seen her perform before.

“NXT’s got the highest viewership of any show I’ve been on. And I think you have to consider as well, WWE is so huge.

The amount of TV equity that Bianca Belair, Rhea Ripley, Charlotte Flair – they have millions of followers, all this TV equity, I know I can go toe-to-toe with them, but I feel like, why wouldn’t I go to NXT?

Continue to build my brand, continue to introduce the WWE Universe, who may know me, probably don’t – I don’t think any of these kids would know me or anything – tell them who I am, and also make NXT my brand, because I truly feel like I am doing that and can do that.

Why wouldn’t I take that opportunity, get that TV equity, build myself in WWE, use the resources, be able to talk to Shawn Michaels and Matt Bloom and all these amazing coaches, learn and grow?

So when I do go to the main roster and I’m going against these juggernauts, I really have the best chance possible to succeed. Because they are huge stars, so I’ve gotta build myself a little.”

Speaking elsewhere, Blake Monroe explained why she felt it was important that her previous ring name “died,” allowing her to have a fresh start. She added that when signing with WWE, she chose to use Blake because it’s her niece’s name.
