WWE Made Change To Becky Lynch’s SummerSlam Opponent
The Women’s Intercontinental Champion Becky Lynch was initially supposed to face somebody other than Lyra Valkyria at SummerSlam.
Ever since she returned to WWE after nearly a year away, Becky Lynch has been embroiled in a rivalry with Lyra Valkyria. Lynch turned on Lyra after the two women won the Women’s Tag Team Titles.
They had matches at Backlash (won by Valkyria) and then at June’s Money in the Bank PLE, Becky Lynch beat Lyra Valkyria to win the Women’s Intercontinental Title for the first time.
Bayley was inserted into the feud because the storyline was that Lynch attacked Bayley to take her out of WrestleMania 41, which led to Lynch teaming with Lyra and winning the Women’s Tag Team Titles.
At the women-only Evolution PLE, the trio of Lynch, Bayley, and Valkyria had an incredible match for the Women’s IC Title as the opening match at the show. Lynch got the clean win there with an incredible backslide pin on Bayley.
One night later at WWE Monday Night Raw, Lyra Valkyria beat Bayley in another excellent match, with the winner earning a shot at Lynch’s Intercontinental Title at SummerSlam.
WWE Had Different Plans For Becky Lynch At SummerSlam
It appeared as though WWE was moving on from the Becky Lynch-Lyra Valkyria rivalry, especially since Valkyria lost at Money in the Bank and Evolution; however, it is still ongoing. The match is official for SummerSlam on August 2nd or 3rd at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
According to Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE’s plan was for Lynch to defend the Women’s IC TItle against Bayley, but those plans changed.
“An internal proposed card for SummerSlam listed Lynch vs Bayley as the match that was planned.”
That means that Bayley could be off the SummerSlam card altogether because there are only so many spots on the show, even when it takes place over two nights.
The updated SummerSlam lineup for August 2 & 3 at MetLife Stadium is below.
- WWE Championship Street Fight: John Cena (c) vs. Cody Rhodes
- Women’s World Championship: Naomi (c) vs. Iyo Sky vs. Rhea Ripley
- World Heavyweight Championship: Gunther (c) vs. CM Punk
- WWE Women’s Championship: Tiffany Stratton (c) vs. Jade Cargill
- Randy Orton & Jelly Roll vs. Drew McIntyre & Logan Paul
- Women’s Intercontinental Championship: Becky Lynch (c) vs. Lyra Valkyria
- WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships – Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez (c) vs. Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss

You can watch SummerSlam on Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3, streaming live at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on Peacock in the United States and on Netflix everywhere else.
