Arn Anderson Reflects On His Unique 'Boxer vs. Wrestler' Match

WWE Hall of Famer Arn Anderson recently shared his thoughts on a memorable bout from his storied career – a ‘boxer vs. wrestler’ match against Johnny B Badd at WCW Uncensored 1995. Speaking on the latest episode of The ARN Show, Anderson provided insights into the unconventional matchup and its storytelling elements.

Anderson admitted that while the concept wasn’t his first choice, he approached it with a professional mindset.

It was not something that I had at the front of my prefrontal lobe and was wishing to do. But you know, it wasn’t that big of a stretch. We’re in the entertainment business. We’re entertainers.

The former Four Horsemen member emphasised the importance of storytelling in wrestling, viewing the match’s unique stipulation as an opportunity to craft an engaging narrative.

I always think ‘Story, story, if I can just tell a story.’ Well, the story was that the boxer who would knock your head off was actually at a disadvantage.

The legendary Four Horsemen member also elaborated on the match’s intriguing dynamic.

Because his opponent, who equally would knock your head off, not as efficiently as a Golden Gloves boxer. But I didn’t have on gloves, so I had the advantage. I was bare-knuckling, and he had on boxing gloves, even though that was one of his fortes.

Arn Anderson also highlighted the importance of Johnny B Badd’s – better known as Marc Mero – real-life boxing background in enhancing the match’s storyline.

That’s the story. You know, it goes far beyond it just being a boxer versus wrestler. That’s like, ‘Okay, why is he the boxer?’ Well, because prior to being a wrestler, that’s what he was. That all helps fill in the blanks.

This reflection from Arn Anderson offers fans a glimpse into the creative process behind one of pro wrestling’s more unique matches, showcasing how wrestlers adapt to unconventional scenarios to deliver compelling in-ring stories.
