Why AJ Lee Was Stunned By Fan Reaction For WWE Return Promo
AJ Lee has admitted that the way fans reacted to her WWE return promo surprised her…in a good way.
At the WWE Wrestlepalooza PLE in September, AJ Lee returned to the WWE ring for the first time in over a decade to team with her husband CM Punk as they defeated Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins in an entertaining mixed tag team match.
In the build-up to that match, AJ Lee did an in-ring promo on the September 8th edition of WWE Monday Night Raw, where she talked about her life in the last decade. Lee courageously spoke about her mental health issues and how therapy helped her. The fans were so supportive of her that they even did a “therapy” chant, which was a first in Raw’s 32-year history.
During an interview on Stephanie McMahon’s “What’s Your Story?” podcast, AJ Lee admitted that she was stunned by how the fans reacted to her promo.
“That was a genuine reaction of like being stunned. I heard one person start to chant it and then a few people around him started chanting “therapy”. And I thought it was so funny.
I heard it and I was like I have to respond to this, three guys were chanting therapy and then everyone started to do it and my mind exploded.
I think if you have a judgmental idea of what you think wrestling crowds could be, you don’t think that they’re in touch with their emotions or open-minded and empathetic like that.”
AJ Lee Has Met WWE Fans Supporting Therapy
As she continued, AJ Lee revealed that she has met fans who have worn shirts supporting therapy because of her promo.
“It was just like my worlds came together and now I did a signing and people had ‘Therapy is cool’ merch, they made themselves. And I’ve had so many people from that moment say they decided to get therapy themselves because of that segment. It’s like what did we do, you guys?
This is the coolest thing in the world to combine these two things that mean everything to me. But I hope those fans know that they are the reason I came back.” (H/T Wrestletalk)
In another part of the interview, Stephanie McMahon and AJ Lee spoke about their past issues on social media and how it was more than just a WWE storyline at the time.
