AEW’s Mercedes Mone Scared By Retirement
Mercedes Mone has contemplated the end of her in-ring career and what might be next for her, but it’s something she finds frightening.
Mercedes Mone has been part of a revolution in women’s wrestling over the past decade. Mone has been a leading star in WWE, NJPW, and now AEW where she holds the TBS Championship.
The CEO walked out of WWE in May 2022 and Mercedes Mone has admitted she almost quit wrestling entirely. But fans were delighted when she returned to the ring and it seems thoughts of walking away from the business again don’t sit easy with Mone.
Mercedes Mone Wants To Stick With Wrestling
Speaking on The Sackhoff Show, Mercedes Mone contemplated life after the ring and revealed that she’d always love to be a part of the wrestling business in some way:
That scares me, I don’t want to think about the word ‘retirement.’ But I do think about slowing down because I’ve been doing it for so long, and aches and pains start to catch up and different dreams start to happen. Life starts to grow and I just have so many more dreams that I want to go pursue, and chase, and go accomplish while I still can being young and feeling good and having my body feel good.
I don’t want to put a timeframe of when that exact moment I will slow down, but I know sooner than later I definitely want to take more time to pursue other things and just really set that place of — What am I going to do when I’m done wrestling? What’s going to bring me the most joy? What is still my passion?
And I still love this business so much. So I always want to be a part of it, whether that’s being a producer or coach, which is putting the matches together and creating something. Or just always being involved with that. I really enjoy the process of creating and forming matches.
I feel like I’m really good at that, especially for a woman. So I feel like, for when I’m done with wrestling, that’s an aspect or an avenue that I want to go into. But right now I’m just on this journey of making women’s wrestling global.
Mercedes Mone will be in action at AEW Revolution on March 9 when she puts her TBS Championship on the line against Momo Watanabe.
