AEW’s Future Uncertain As Warner Bros. Discovery Put Up For Sale
AEW’s future looks uncertain as the three front-runners to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery emerge.
Since AEW was formed in 2019, Tony Khan’s company has had a relationship with Warner Bros. Discovery, with its programs airing on TBS and TNT. However, the television landscape has changed beyond all recognition, and WWE signed a multi-billion dollar deal with streaming giant Netflix, taking Raw off mainstream TV in the USA.
Now Warner Bros. Discovery has put itself up for sale, raising serious questions about what it means for the future of AEW. Fans of a certain vintage will remember the AOL/Time Warner merger eventually being the final nail in the coffin of WCW in 2001. But it should be noted that where AEW currently is and the state WCW was in at that time are night and day.
AEW’s Future Up In The Air With WBD?
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the impending sale and revealed the three frontrunners who have an interest in acquiring WBD:
Right now, it looks like the three most likely people – it’s really a complicated story because there are so many things that are going on all at the same time. WBD itself still has plans to split into two entities, one would be all the cable stations, and the other would be streaming services and the movie studio.
The suitors, Netflix is looking at it, Paramount Skydance is looking at it and the other one is Comcast. Comcast which owns NBC and USA is also in the midst of a split up where they are essentially going to unload all their TV stations into another company and keep the network and the streaming stations. There is a lot of different things that could happen as far as who gets it. The future of AEW is certainly involved in all this, and it could go many different ways.
What’s going to happen, probably in the next year or so, is everything is going to change. As far as how it changes, who owns what is totally up in the air. And what it means is also totally up in the air.
