AEW Women’s Division Praised As The Best In The World
Tony Khan was full of praise for the AEW Women’s Division.
The arrival of Mercedes Mone in March shone the spotlight onto AEW’s women’s division like never before. Mone was one of the most in-demand free agents in the world before signing with AEW and upon completing the deal she became the highest-paid female performer in history.
Since then, Mone has gone on to become TBS Champion, pinning Willow Nightingale at Double or Nothing.
Meanwhile, Toni Storm is enjoying the best run of her career after reinventing herself under her “Timeless” persona alongside Mariah May — another signing from Stardom.
With Forbidden Door just around the corner, Tony Khan appeared on WGN Radio and talked up his women’s champions, claiming the women’s division is now the best in the world.
“I think right now across the board everyone thinks this is by far the best wrestling in the history of AEW in the women’s division and I think we have the best women’s wrestling in the world right now,” Khan said.
“There’s more competition and more talent in the AEW women’s division than there’s ever been, and more big matches. I think by far 2024 has been the best year of the AEW women’s division and I give so much of the credit to ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm the World Champion and Mercedes Mone the TBS Champion and a lot of other great wrestlers like Kris Statlander, Willow Nightingale.”
At Forbidden Door, Mercedes Mone will meet Stephanie Vaquer with both the TBS and NJPW STRONG Women’s Titles on the line, while Toni Storm defends her AEW Women’s Title against Mina Shirakawa.
AEW Forbidden Door Will Have Two Of The Best Women’s Matches Ever
Khan went on to describe Mercedes Mone as the “biggest free agent signing in the history of women’s pro wrestling,” tipping both matches at Forbidden Door to dazzle fans.
“I think two of the greatest women’s championship matches ever on the same card,” Khan said of Forbidden Door. “To have the AEW Women’s World Champion, ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm, an icon of the cinema and pro wrestling ring taking on Mina Shirakawa in a match that the fans absolutely want to see and a great story that’s been developing between Toni, Mina, and their shared love for Mariah May.”
“And to have the TBS Champion, the face of the channel, Mercedes Mone, the biggest free agent signing in the history of women’s pro wrestling and one of the biggest free agent signings ever in wrestling, came to AEW, has won the TBS Championship, is the face of our channel, and now she’s going to take on one of the top international wrestlers, Stephanie Vaquer.”
In a recent post on social media, Tony Khan hit back at criticism of AEW’s TV ratings, while celebrating the one-year anniversary of Collision.
