AEW Boss Tony Khan Announces New Championship
Tony Khan had a big announcement following AEW Collision.
Following AEW Collision in Springfield, Massachusetts, and before the next Ring of Honor taping kicked off, Tony Khan announced the creation of the ROH Women’s Pure Championship. A tournament will soon be underway, with the inaugural champion crowned at Supercard of Honor on May 2.
Under pure rules, there are restrictions on closed fist punches, wrestlers get three rope breaks for pins and submissions, there’s no outside interference, and three judges to declare a winner in the event of a draw. The current men’s champion is Lee Moriarty.
The new championship will be the third women’s title in Ring of Honor following the creation of the World Television Championship in December 2023. Red Velvet is the current champion and Athena remains the Women’s World Champion.
Athena Making Waves In AEW
After standing tall over the ROH women’s division for over 850 days, Athena has now set her sights on doing the same in AEW.
The star is currently taking part in the Owen Hart Cup and most recently got past Harley Cameron on Collision. That victory has set up a semi-final clash with Mercedes Mone on the special Spring Break Thru on April 16. In the other semi-final, Kris Statlander meets Jamie Hayter.
Mercedes Mone vs. Athena has been talked about among fans since the former signed with AEW in March 2024. In recent weeks it was reported that the showdown would be happening way sooner than many first thought.
